Two views of the writer’s strike
On Monday, Hollywood writers went on strike after negative negotiations. What exactly are the writers asking for? Along with other payment negotiations, one of the key element is how much will a writer be paid when episodes of their show is available on the Internet.
Christopher at Grid Effect makes a good point.
“The point being, for all the celebrity worship that runs rampant through this country, Hollywood and the entertainment industry don’t exist without the WGA.”
In effect there would be no Hollywood without the Writer’s Guild of America. Celebrities would have to go to the studios with their own script and ask for a role in their own storyline.
Though it may be trivial to most, I completely support the Writers that are on strike. I certainly would want them to support me, if Bloggers went on strike. Writers play an important part in business and they should obtain payment for everything that they produce.
I’m not happy that there may not be more episodes of “Hero” and “Chuck”. There are some great television shows and I hate reruns. Associated Press reports that along with late night television several other shows will be affected.
Here’s an interesting note, The “Oprah” show does not employ union writers. Interesting, very interesting indeed.
As a Television viewer, the strike is just bad business for television and San Jose, California. There is the fact the viewers like myself might decide to go elsewhere and stay with the new shows. It’s the domino effect in television. Writer’s strike, shows go into reruns, commercials aren’t viewed, products aren’t purchased and station affiliates have problems.
How long will the strike go on? How deeply will it affect television viewing, well just have to wait and see. All I can say is “Thank God for books and Comcast!”
How do you feel San Jose? Are there Writers out there who support the Strike or do you think that they’re just being greedy?
