San Jose Favorites: Chinese Food

by

chinese.jpgIt seems that San Jose goes for originality over classic Chinese food. The top three are Chef Chu’s in Los Altos, Chef Mings in Palo Alto, and my personal favorite Wings in San Jose.

Chef Chu’s
Chef Chu has been serving great Chinese food to the Bay Area for many years. Chef Chu’s hand on approach has made the restaurant what it is today. Chef Chu’s is a place where friends and family can experience quick, healthy, simple and delicious food.

I agree with Rachel Ray! If you want to experience a restaurant and not the price, then try the place at lunchtime. Chef Chu has created a wonderful menu for either lunch or dinner.

My favorite is the Sichuan Beef. The beef is so tender that it almost melts in your mouth. The Sichuan Beef does pack a punch in spice. So unless spiciness is your thing, I would choose something else. Mike loves the Lemon Chicken. I swear the man will eat anything fried.

Chef Mings
The grandfather of Chinese food has been serving the Bay Area since 1956. Chef Ming does things in a grand fashion. Chef Mings serves over 200 dishes to customers in a room that can seat 500.

I haven’t had the chance to eat at Chef Mings but I look forward to it. The online menu looks amazing. Chef Mings was given an honorable mention in the 2007 Wave Magazine Readers Choice Awards.

Wings
I would call Wings the great grandfather of Chinese food. Wings have been serving favorable food to San Jose residents since 1925.

As we sat down for dinner, our friend Sara mentioned that she felt like she was in a mafia movie.

The décor does bring memories of Chinese mafia movies with its semiprivate rooms and beaded curtains. They even have a buzzer to summon service. The only problem is that the room temperature is five degrees warmer than outside.

The food is plentiful and really good. Wings serve the classics hot and fresh. What really caught my eye were items that I haven’t seen on a menu before like White Cucumber Pork and Vanilla Prawns. I’ll have to go back and give those a try one day.

The deliver service is semi-decent. Wings did deliver the food hot and fresh from the stove but they forgot our drinks. I doubt we will have a drink credit the next time we order.
