Monday Review: The Fountain
Yesterday, today, tomorrow. Past, present, future. Through time and space, one man embarks on a bold 1000-year odyssey to defeat humankind’s most indomitable foe: Death.
Death, Oh is that what the movie is about? Isn’t the movie much more than that though? Could someone not say that the movie is about life and how we try to hold onto it with such boldness that we would do anything to keep going?
I have to admit that the movie and concept is a hard act to follow. Each level of the movie mirrored each other and at times seemed to intertwine with each other.
Hugh Jackman plays the man, devoted to one woman, determined to protect her from forces that threaten her existence. A conquistador facing the flaming sword himself to drink from the tree of life and save the woman that he loves. A scientist researching the essence of trees to find a treatment for his soul mate and a space traveler battling to keep a tree alive that is continuing his life.
In each role, Hugh Jackman is intense. As the role of the conquistador he made me believe that he would do anything for his love. As the scientist, I could feel the pain and frustration of being so close to a solution and watching your love slowly slip away.
Rachel Weisz is the love in two roles. Rachel Weisz plays a Queen of the Spanish empire being overpowered by religion and beliefs. She also plays a writer battling an illness that is attacking her body.
As the Queen, it is almost as if she is representing herself and Spain. Surely, she is about to be put to death, but there is a mixture of human death and the death of views of the world.
In modern day she battles this illness that has a death sentence of its own. In dying, she finds life in many ways and I believe she finds the true meaning of death.
Using Duds and Delights as a guide. I would have to give The Foutain a $7-8 value. I think this movie has enough metaphoric scientific depth about life to see it on a second rate big screen but definitely pick it up on DVD.
