This Weeks Events In San Jose

Monday, December 10th, 2007

CityDome.jpgWhat to do? What to do? What is there to do around San Jose during this crazy holiday season?

Christmas In The Park
If you haven’t done so already, head down to Cesar Chavez Park. Christmas in the park is still going strong. There are some great looking and decorated trees for different companies around San Jose, California.

Light Haiku
Located 1st and 2nd street, just south of San Fernando is the works of Artist Chris Eckert. Chris has mixed technology with ancient Japanese poetry to produce this enormous 650 square foot Haiku of lights.

The Light Haiku will be on display nightly until the end of January 2008.

Apoptosis
Is war and destruction artwork if it’s destruction of artwork? How do you feel about it?
Artist Taro Hatorri poses this question while re-creates various forms of devastation in his installation.

By using destroyed walls, wooden flooring, cracks, gaps, and slanted surfaces Taro Hattori creates artwork that speaks to our mind.

You can view the instillation for yourself at Space 47

A November Thursday In San Jose

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

CityDome.jpgOne more day till TGIF and the weekend. As we prepare for the holidays, I’m sure we still want things to do to relax and spend time with family. San Jose is a bustling town and there is a lot to do today.

Family Supportive Housing Inc is having their Annual Soup Kitchen Dinner. I can’t believe that the dinner has been going strong for 21 years. Enjoy a great meal, support a wonderful organization and enjoy music from The Magnolia Jazz Band.

Family Supportive Housing Inc works hard each year helping those in need. In 2006, Family Supportive Housing Inc. provided housing for 175 families and supplied 633 San Jose residents with daily necessities. They also prepared over 172,000 meals for those in need.

Helping Out – Domestic Violence Awareness

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Purple_Ribbon.jpgYesterday I wrote about speaking for those who are unable to. As a victim of Domestic Violence, I have experience first hand what it feels like to feel trapped and hopeless.

There is the shame of hiding physical and emotional scars from the world around you. Many times I had felt that no one understood what I was going through ore even cared.
http://www.about-sanjoseca.com/speak-out-domestic-violence-awareness/

Thankfully there are organizations and people that do care and that are willing to help. These organizations are only a phone call away from helping the abused, batterers, and families of Domestic Violence.

Here are several organizations in Silicon Valley that are willing to help.

Battered Women 24 Hour Hotline
1-800-572-2782

This number will connect you to a counselor 24 hours a day. They also have a main office located at:
1257 Tasman Dr Ste C, Sunnyvale, CA

Coming This Week: The War On Domestic Violence

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

rage.jpgDomestic Violence is a silent epidemic that affects all of us.

From child, to adult, to neighbor Domestic Violence has affected our lives in some form or fashion. It’s time to break the silence and do something about Domestic Violence.

In San Jose, one of four women has suffered an assault. Domestic Violence doesn’t stop with women. There are cases where women attack men; men attack men, and women attack women in homes.

For the next three days, twelve 451 Press Bloggers and I will discuss this deadly issue, to bring a voice where a voice is needed. It is my hope that you will take away something that will cause you to act.

In the next three days, I will talk about:
Speaking Out – How to speak out when the victim is unable.
Helping Out – Organizations that help victims, attackers, and their families in San Jose.
Crying Out – The effects of Domestic Violence on children and how they can speak out.

Prader-Willi Syndrome Support In San Jose, CA

Monday, September 24th, 2007

baby.jpgI knew there was Down Sydrome but Prader-Willi Syndrome is new to me. What exactly is Prader-Willi Syndrome and is there support for parents in San Jose, California? Thankfully the answer is yes!

Prader-Willi Syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes prominent foreheads, almond-shaped eyes, poor sucking and swallowing reflexes, small extremities and cryptorchidism in babies.

I couldn’t imagine what a parent goes through with a child that has Prader-Willi Syndrome but there is support in the San Jose community. The Prader-Willi Association offers information on current events, research, support, and offers after hours support.

San Jose Safeway.com Doesn’t Deliver

Monday, September 24th, 2007

groceries.jpgAs a convenience to busy lives, Safeway offers the advantage of ordering groceries online and having them delivered between certain hours. You would think that this is an advantage but Safeway.com doesn’t deliver.

Website maneuverability
Safeway.com is actually really easy to use. A customer simply has to fill out a small form to access the website. Most products are categorized by type of food. Safeway.com also has a quick search engine. The search engine definitely comes in handy when a customer is looking for a name brand.

Speed
As a grocery store that has delivery service, a person would think that Safeway has quick service. I have found that it actually takes up more time than going to the actual store.
The actual shopping online takes about the same time it would take to shop inside of Safeway.

The time crunch comes during delivery. Safeway.com requires a window of either two hours or four hours. Don’t expect to get quick delivery in the evening time. Traffic is horrible between 4-6pm and it causes the delivery person to be late

2007 Obon Festival & Taiko Workshop

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

taiko_1.jpgI love when the people of San Jose, California celebrate their culture and heritage.

The Obon Festival in Japantown is just the case! Here is a great Taiko group performing “Seven Lands”.

The Taiko drumming actually has a hint of mystery and were thought to be used on the battlefield. Taiko drummers would play loudly to scare the opposing side.

San Jose Favorites: Attractions

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Every year the Wave magazine holds their anual Silicon Valley Readers’ Choice Awards. A time when San Jose residents can vote for their favorite place to grab a bite to the best place for a yearly check up.

The following are Winners, Honorable mentions, and suggestions for when you don’t agree with the crowds vote. I’ve included my favorites and I would love to hear yours!

Attractions
Winner: The Tech Museum of Innovation
The Tech Museum of Innovation offers attraction for the whole family. Many of the past exhibits have been on animation, robotics, and even the human body.

There are currently 240 different areas to explore, create and build in at The Tech Museum of Innovation. During my recent visit, Mike and I had a great time designing a hybrid car. Let’s just say that Mike is the mastermind when it comes to electric motors, tires, and efficiency.

San Jose Remembers 9/11

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

911.jpg
I was on a west bound train towards work when the radio announced that a plane crashed into Tower 1. I was shocked and all I could do was close my eyes and pray.

I was in shocked for what I was praying for. My prayers were for those who could get out would and then I prayed for the families who I know wouldn’t have a family member coming home. Then I cried.

Those two planes were like daggers into the hearts of everyone and still is today. I don’t know how long or if America will heal from this tragedy. Through the years of healing it has brought this nation together.

In San Jose, there will be a rememberance ceremony with San Jose Fire and Police departments. San Jose City Hall, 200 E. Santa Clara St. (408) 535-3500

O’Flaherty’s Pub, in San Pedro Square, will donate $1 from every drink to the San Jose Firefighters Burn Foundation. So raise your glasses in honor to all the heroes and our nation.
