More warm hands to come

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

mittens.jpgJennifer Gooch asks the question “ Do you have one cold hand?” The CMU student created a Blogger site asking the same question. ‘One Cold Hand’ has been up for a month and has great success.

Jennifer has helped CMU students match up with their ski, leather, and yes-even leopard print gloves. With over 55,000 hits in the past month Jennifer plans to create a site for every city. People who love the idea have even spearheaded efforts in setting up glove collection sites in their area.

So what happens to the gloves that are not returned to their owners? It seams that this resourceful art student has planned to produce a coffee table book of the found gloves. Maybe we’ll even get to read the stories about the people who lost their glove.

I wonder what is next? A site called ‘one bare foot?’ perhaps. Or maybe ‘tot flop’? A site where parents can find the pieces of clothing their children mysteriously lose in stores. Parents you know this happens, Walmart created a commercial around it.

O.K. Art Students of San Jose State, where are you hiding your site?

No matter what spawns off of ‘One Cold Hand?’ I wish Jennifer Gooch the prosperity with her site, her education, and her future!.

911.jpg
Where did the weekend go! Here we are at Friday most likely spending the next two days getting ready for another week. It’s Veteran week in this household!

I thought it would be cool to showcase the Veterans in San Jose, California. I would love to hear about your personal experiences as a Veteran or as a person who has a Veteran in their family. If you’re against Veterans and war, it’s O.K. to speak up too. Just remember to be respectful.

Should it happen in San Jose schools?

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

backpack.jpgIn a school in South Yorkshire, students who were uniforms are being tracked by GPS. The GPS is linked to a computer at the school that monitors the students’ attendance, location, and alert teachers to student behavior.

As a parent, how would you feel? Human rights campaigners are up in arms about the tracking. Some believe that the school is taking on a “Big Brother” approach and this would be normally be suited for someone just exiting prison.

I don’t see what the harm is. The microchip is not implanted into the child themselves but the clothing. All children in the study are volunteers. I don’t believe that a school would enforce student tracking without parental consent.

The system could be help for parents, teachers and the police. Along with logging attendance and grades, the database could include information such as medical history. Less time would be spent on attendance and teachers would be able to get right into class studies.

On the negative side, computers can be hacked into. People could obtain private information and use it to their advantage. I’m sure that everyone wants to keep his or her student and child safe from harm.

San Jose, California it’s your turn to voice your opinion. Would you like to see GPS testing happening in your school? Or do you like the old fashion way where teachers physically took attendance?

Helping Out – Domestic Violence Awareness

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Purple_Ribbon.jpgYesterday I wrote about speaking for those who are unable to. As a victim of Domestic Violence, I have experience first hand what it feels like to feel trapped and hopeless.

There is the shame of hiding physical and emotional scars from the world around you. Many times I had felt that no one understood what I was going through ore even cared.
http://www.about-sanjoseca.com/speak-out-domestic-violence-awareness/

Thankfully there are organizations and people that do care and that are willing to help. These organizations are only a phone call away from helping the abused, batterers, and families of Domestic Violence.

Here are several organizations in Silicon Valley that are willing to help.

Battered Women 24 Hour Hotline
1-800-572-2782

This number will connect you to a counselor 24 hours a day. They also have a main office located at:
1257 Tasman Dr Ste C, Sunnyvale, CA

Speak Out Domestic Violence Awareness

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Purple_Ribbon.jpgPerhaps people do it because they don’t want to get involved in other people’s affairs. Perhaps people think that the violence will turn their direction. There is a reason Domestic Violence is a silent epidemic. People are afraid to speak out for themselves and for others.

People rush to the scene of an accident and call 911. Why can’t the same be done for a Domestic Violence victim? There are things that you can do to help.

Contact The Police
Your local Police Department will have information on Domestic Violence laws and procedures. The Police will also have information on how the victim can obtain a restraining order.

If you witness Domestic Violence, please call 911. You have the right to be anonymous but no one deserves to be beaten and battered.

Coming This Week: The War On Domestic Violence

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

rage.jpgDomestic Violence is a silent epidemic that affects all of us.

From child, to adult, to neighbor Domestic Violence has affected our lives in some form or fashion. It’s time to break the silence and do something about Domestic Violence.

In San Jose, one of four women has suffered an assault. Domestic Violence doesn’t stop with women. There are cases where women attack men; men attack men, and women attack women in homes.

For the next three days, twelve 451 Press Bloggers and I will discuss this deadly issue, to bring a voice where a voice is needed. It is my hope that you will take away something that will cause you to act.

In the next three days, I will talk about:
Speaking Out – How to speak out when the victim is unable.
Helping Out – Organizations that help victims, attackers, and their families in San Jose.
Crying Out – The effects of Domestic Violence on children and how they can speak out.

Prader-Willi Syndrome Support In San Jose, CA

Monday, September 24th, 2007

baby.jpgI knew there was Down Sydrome but Prader-Willi Syndrome is new to me. What exactly is Prader-Willi Syndrome and is there support for parents in San Jose, California? Thankfully the answer is yes!

Prader-Willi Syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes prominent foreheads, almond-shaped eyes, poor sucking and swallowing reflexes, small extremities and cryptorchidism in babies.

I couldn’t imagine what a parent goes through with a child that has Prader-Willi Syndrome but there is support in the San Jose community. The Prader-Willi Association offers information on current events, research, support, and offers after hours support.

2007 Obon Festival & Taiko Workshop

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

taiko_1.jpgI love when the people of San Jose, California celebrate their culture and heritage.

The Obon Festival in Japantown is just the case! Here is a great Taiko group performing “Seven Lands”.

The Taiko drumming actually has a hint of mystery and were thought to be used on the battlefield. Taiko drummers would play loudly to scare the opposing side.

San Jose Favorites: Best Bowling Alley

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

bowling.jpgI actually thought that Bowling was out of style. The days of rental shoes, clashing pins, and hand blowers had come a thing of the past. Bowling is actual an activity to do and people are doing it with style.

Bay area residents voted 300 to be the coolest play to knock the pins down. Cleverly named after a great game of Bowling, 300 claims to be strikingly different. If I were judging by décor, I would have to say that it is.

Extreme bowling fun features digital bowling lanes, full bar, pool tables, Sports Telecast, and a full grill. The grill has old time favorites with a modern twist. I had the “Team Extreme” with my fiancé Mike. The Team Extreme is a platter of Buffalo wings, Nachos, Mozzarella sticks, Garlic Fries, and Shanghai Egg Rollers.

Everything was great! Mike loved the Garlic Fries and went for the Egg Rollers. The Sweet Chili Garlic Sauce is an interesting mixture with the fried Egg Rollers.

300 San Jose is located at:
