An Entrepreneurial City?
The thought is definitely interesting. This morning I woke up to an article in The New York Times about a man who has a different job every week.
Now Sean Aiken has the life and I could see myself doing that. At least some form of having several jobs during the year.
So why is Sean Aiken taking on 52 jobs? He was a little dismayed about his father not being passionate about the job he has been at for over thirty years. So Mr. Aiken set out to find the perfect job and to find himself.
I then I said to my self “What if all the people in San Jose, California were like Sean?” Instead of applying for jobs in Corporations and businesses people would advertise their skills and accomplishments.
Consultants would be responsible for their education, health insurance, dental insurance, full disability insurance, and retirement plans.
I think there would be a few extra tax benefits because you now would be a business within yourself.
Items like transportation costs, clothing, computer supplies, and education would be tax deductible.
Though I don’t see how Corporations and businesses would benefit because I’m sure that health insurance, dental insurance, disability and retirement fees would be added into the price of the consultant.
I tried this concept with a couple of companies. I contacted them advertising my skills, experience, and education. Some companies liked the idea, some companies worried about stability. But what is stability really? Most people stay a job less than three years, so wouldn’t a renewable one-year contract be better?
So what do you think? Do you think that San Jose, California would work as an entrepreneurial City? Has the concept sparked interest? Or do you think that everything is fine the way that it is today?
